Meet Leawood Fire Chief, Colin Fitzgerald

What inspired you or led you to your current career?  I think I always knew I was going to do something in public service.  Starting as a youth at a small town in Boy Scouts and then when I went into the Air Force, I was actually a firefighter in the Air Force so I got my start with the training there and just continued it on.

How far did you get in the Boy Scouts?  I made it up to Life Scout.

What do you do for fun? It mostly revolves around my son, he’s in Scouts, I’m actually Scout Leader. We do a lot of outdoor activities, a lot of camping and stuff.  Just the normal parenthood stuff, getting the youth activities, orchestra, travelng and that kind of stuff.

What is something you love about Johnson County?  For Leawood, How supportive everybody here is of what we do.   We really do have great support and people are glad we are here, it’s a good place to live and work.

When friends or family visit you, where do you take them?  For bbq

Which bbq restaurant is your favorite?  Joe’s Kansas City

What’s your favorite menu item? Z-man.  We went the other day and now they like 8 different kinds of Z-mans but I still have to go traditional.

What age would you be again and why?  There’s probably not a lot I would change, I would say maybe 18, right out of high school just to have a little more direction with how I was going to pursue things.

What is your favorite restaurant? It’s a toss-up between Mexican/Pizza

What is your favorite movie?  It tends to be either comedy or adventure…probably comedy…Step Brothers with Will Ferrell.

What is something on your bucket list?  I want to go to New Zealand.

What’s the one thing you’d grab if you had to leave your home in an emergency (everyone and the pets are safe)?  My first thoughts would be for the people and the animals so it’s just what I couldn’t live without after that, and it’s all just stuff.

Where do you see yourself in 5 or 10 years? Well, we will be empty nesters, I’ll still be here at Leawood but I’ll be getting towards the end of my career looking towards retirement and what we are going to do.

Do you know someone who is a positive influence in our community? Please let us know, we would love to meet them for consideration to our Artist Project!
